The Asante Akim Central Municipal is one of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 43 of MMDAs in the Ashanti Region and has Konongo as its Administrative Capital. The Asante Akim Central Municipal (formerly Asante Akim North Municipal) was carved out of the erstwhile Asante Akim District Council in 1988 as part of the Ghana’s Decentralization Process. The Municipality is located in the eastern part of Ashanti Region and lies between latitude 60 30’ North and 70 30’ North and longitude 00 15’ West and 10 20’ West. It covers a land area of 1,160 sq. km with an estimated population of 169,976 in 2010 (projection from 2000 Population Census. The Municipality shares boundaries with Sekyere East District on the north, Kwahu South District on the east, Asante Akim South Municipal on the south and Juaben Municipal on the west. The population of the Municipal according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census stands at 71,508 with 33,942 males 37,566 females.

FUNCTIONS

The functions summarizes the roles of the various structures of the LGS to ensure participation at the local level in mobilizing and utilising resources to ensure development.

Our function as stipulated in Section 12 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) is to;
·  (a) be responsible for the overall development of the district;
·  (b) formulate and execute plans, programmes and strategies for the effective mobilisation of the resources necessary for the overall development of the district;
·  (c) promote and support productive activity and social development in the district and remove any obstacles to initiative and development;
·  (d) sponsor the education of students from the district to fill particular manpower needs of the district especially in the social sectors of education and health, making sure that the sponsorship is fairly and equitably balanced between male and female students;
·  (e) initiate programmes for the development of basic infrastructure and provide municipal works and services in the district;
·  (f) be responsible for the development, improvement and management of human settlements and the environment in the district;
·  (g) in co-operation with the appropriate national and local security agencies, be responsible for the maintenance of security and public safety in the district;
·  (h) ensure ready access to courts in the district for the promotion of justice;
·  (i) act to preserve and promote the cultural heritage within the district;
·  (j) initiate, sponsor or carry out studies that may be necessary for the discharge of any of the duties conferred by this Act or any other enactment; and
·  (k) perform any other functions that may be provided under another enactment.

OBJECTIVES

The local Government Service (LGS) which includes the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS),  MMDAs and the RCCs, has as its  governing body a LGS Council which oversees governance issues and ensures effective functioning of the LGS.
